Xcel Energy Colorado Heat Pump Rebate 2026: Amounts After October 1, Deadlines
Xcel Energy pays Colorado residential electric and/or natural gas customers a heat pump rebate through its Trade Partner Network contractors. What Xcel’s own page states, read on October 2, 2026: rebate amounts vary by qualifying equipment and cannot exceed installation costs; invoices and installations must be completed by December 31, 2026; applications are accepted through September 30, 2027; income-qualified customers may get up to the full cost covered. What Xcel does not print is the amount per ton. How much is the Xcel heat pump rebate in Colorado after October 1, 2026?
Xcel’s page says only that amounts vary by qualifying equipment; the dollar figures reach you through the contractor who files the application. Before October 1, participating contractors across the Front Range reported $2,250 per heating ton for a cold-climate heat pump and $900 per cooling ton for a standard one, with the higher cold-climate figure tied to a bonus for customers who heat with Xcel natural gas. In August 2026 Xcel told its trade partners that the bonus would fall from three times to two times the standard rebate on October 1; the same contractors now report about $1,500 and $600 per ton. On a 3-ton cold-climate system that is roughly $4,500 instead of $6,750 for the identical installation. A heat pump water heater is reported at up to $2,250. Because none of these numbers is on Xcel’s page, we show them with that attribution and nothing stronger: a quote without a written rebate line is a quote without a rebate.
The deadlines Xcel publishes: December 31, 2026 and September 30, 2027
Two dates are on Xcel’s page in its own words, re-read on October 2, 2026: invoices and installations must be completed by December 31, 2026, and applications for rebates are accepted through September 30, 2027. We first published both on September 25 from a single participating contractor with a confirmation flag; Xcel’s page now carries them, the flag is gone and the entry on our deadlines page cites Xcel directly. The sentence that announced the October 1 bonus change is no longer on the page, so that deadline has passed and stays on our list as passed. The October 15 application date that contractors cited for September installs is not on the page either; we keep it flagged. If your installation will straddle the new year, ask Xcel which program year and which rebate table apply before you sign, and have the contractor confirm the answer in writing on the quote.
Who qualifies and how the rebate is paid
Residential electric and/or natural gas Xcel Energy customers in Colorado are eligible, which means a home that buys only gas from Xcel can still claim the heat pump rebate. Income-qualified customers may be eligible for additional rebates and services that cover up to the full cost of a heat pump and its installation; Xcel verifies eligibility through its Home Energy Squad. Two paths exist. A contractor from Xcel’s Trade Partner Network can install the system and handle the rebate for you, completing the application and either applying the rebate directly to your invoice or having Xcel send a check. For a mini-split heat pump you may install it yourself and submit the application online. Either way the rebate cannot exceed installation costs. Xcel’s page does not list equipment minimums; the cold-climate definition contractors apply — rated capacity at 5°F and a minimum COP — comes from the trade-partner materials, so ask for the AHRI listing that supports the cold-climate rate on your quote.
Stacking Xcel with the state heat pump tax credit and Power Ahead Colorado
The Xcel rebate is one of three incentives that land on the same Colorado invoice, and none of them checks income. Colorado’s heat pump tax credit pays a registered contractor $1,000 for an air-source heat pump, $2,000 for ground-source and $250 for a heat pump water heater in 2026, with at least a third passed to you as a line labeled “State of Colorado Heat Pump Discount” — at minimum $333, $667 and $83. Power Ahead Colorado adds a flat $1,500 for a certified cold-climate heat pump in an existing building in participating Front Range counties. The two registries are separate: a company can be on Xcel’s Trade Partner Network without being a state-registered heat pump tax credit contractor, and missing either forfeits that money. The federal 25C credit expired December 31, 2025, and Colorado’s single-family HEAR rebate is closed with $0 remaining, so for a Denver-area house these three are the whole stack. Full detail and the official tables are on our Colorado page.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm you are an Xcel electric and/or gas customer in Colorado; ask the Home Energy Squad about income-qualified eligibility if it may apply.
- Choose a Trade Partner Network contractor (and, for the state credit, one that is also state-registered); for a DIY mini-split, plan to apply online.
- Get the Xcel rebate amount and the “State of Colorado Heat Pump Discount” as separate written lines on the quote, with the AHRI listing for the cold-climate rate.
- Have the installation completed and invoiced by December 31, 2026.
- Make sure the application is submitted — by the contractor or by you — before September 30, 2027, and keep the confirmation.

- What is the Xcel heat pump rebate deadline in Colorado?
- Per Xcel’s page, read October 2, 2026: invoices and installations must be completed by December 31, 2026, and rebate applications are accepted through September 30, 2027. The gas-heating bonus was reduced on October 1, 2026.
- Do I need an Xcel contractor to get the rebate?
- For a ducted system Xcel’s page points to its Trade Partner Network, whose contractors complete the application and apply the rebate to the invoice or have Xcel send a check. A mini-split heat pump may be installed yourself, with the application submitted online.
- Does the Xcel rebate apply if I only have Xcel gas, not electricity?
- Yes. Xcel’s page says residential electric and/or natural gas Xcel customers in Colorado are eligible. The higher bonus for homes that heat with Xcel gas was reduced on October 1, 2026, per contractor reports.
- Can I combine the Xcel rebate with the Colorado heat pump tax credit?

- Is the Xcel rebate the same in Minnesota?
- No. Xcel runs separate rebate programs by state; this page covers Colorado only. Our registry lists Minnesota as not yet verified.
