Heat pump water heater rebates: four utility pages and two federal credit pages read in full — verified October 5, 2026, CozyKilowatt

Read in full Oct. 5: Con Edison $1,500 instant (Sept. 1–Nov. 30, then $1,300), PSE $1,000, BGE $1,600, NorthWestern $3,000; the 25C and 25D credits ended Dec. 31, 2025.

On October 5, 2026 we read in full the heat pump water heater pages of four utilities and the two federal credit pages, and published a guide that puts them side by side. Con Edison pays a $1,500 instant rebate on an ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater under 120 gallons bought between September 1 and November 30, 2026, at a participating Lowe’s or Home Depot or through a contractor’s distributor; outside that window the coupon is $1,300, and Con Edison states that reimbursement is not available after the purchase. Search engines still cache the page at $1,000.

Puget Sound Energy’s page pays $1,000 ($1,100 with Efficiency Boost) on a Tier 3 or 4 unit, by coupon at the register, through an installer or by online claim within 30 days — while its meta description still says $500 and its rebate form prints $750 and $850. BGE pays up to $1,600 plus up to $1,500 toward home preparation when a gas, oil or propane heater is replaced, one rebate per address. NorthWestern Energy offers up to $3,000 “for a limited time,” only through a participating contractor, only for homes that already heat water with an electric tank, and not for self-installed units.

The federal side is closed: the IRS says the 25C credit (30%, up to $2,000) does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025, and the 25D credit ended the same day. ENERGY STAR’s page still shows the 30% / $2,000 headline above a date line that ends in 2025, and that headline is what an AI answer presented as current on October 5. Both errors are now in our corrections log.

What this means for you

If you are a Con Edison electric customer, a receipt dated by November 30 is worth $200 more than one dated December 1, and the coupon must exist before you pay. Everywhere else, the rebate is your utility’s, not the government’s: check the channel (coupon or claim), the days to apply and the fuel you are replacing before you buy, and do not plan on a 2026 federal tax credit that no longer exists.
