Wisconsin: Focus on Energy stopped accepting retail purchases for fossil-fuel replacements on September 1

Since September 1, 2026, Focus on Energy no longer takes retail purchases for equipment replacing gas or propane appliances; earlier coupons are honored.

Focus on Energy’s HEAR page, read on September 25, 2026, states that from September 1, 2026 the program no longer accepts retail purchases for equipment that replaces fossil-fuel appliances. Coupons issued before that date are still honored. The change follows DOE Program Notice 26-2, effective May 29, 2026, which removed fuel-switching from the federal electrification rebates.

Wisconsin remains one of the few states where the federal rebates are live: HEAR pays up to $14,000 and HOMES follows a six-step matrix, with Focus on Energy’s own discounts stackable on top. Whether the contractor route still covers gas or propane replacements under the new federal rules is a question to put to Focus on Energy directly; the page does not say.

Separately, Focus on Energy’s 2026 requirements tie this year’s rebates to installation between January 1 and December 31, 2026, with applications within 60 days and no later than January 31, 2027. A Wisconsin guide marked “updated June 5” still shows the retail route and an August 31 deadline.

What this means for you

If you planned to buy a heat pump at a store and claim the rebate for replacing a gas furnace, that path closed on September 1. Work through a registered contractor and ask Focus on Energy, before you sign, whether your specific replacement still qualifies.
