Xcel’s Colorado rebate site add rules its heat pump page omits: contractor required, $600 insulate-first bonus

Read October 3: Xcel’s rebate information pages require a participating contractor and add a $600 bonus for insulating before the heat pump, within two years.
Xcel Energy’s Colorado heat pump page says little about amounts or installers. Its rebate information pages, hosted for Xcel at poweredbyefi.org and blocked outside the United States, say more; we read them on October 3, 2026 from a US location. To qualify, you must be a residential electric and/or natural gas Xcel customer in Colorado, and the equipment must be installed by a current participating contractor, who gives you a mostly completed application. That is narrower than the heat pump page, which also describes a mini-split you install yourself and apply for online. We publish both statements as written.
Three more rules the heat pump page leaves out: rental properties qualify, with the tenant naming the landlord as Alternate Rebate Recipient; each qualifying system earns its own rebate; the system needs an AHRI certificate with matched indoor and outdoor components, SEER2 where AHRI lists both ratings.
The pages also print a dollar figure: a $600 bonus for completing rebate-qualifying insulation and air sealing before a rebate-qualifying space-heating heat pump, invoices within two years of each other (earlier Xcel sheets said six months). Per-ton heat pump amounts are still not published by Xcel; they remain contractor-reported on our pages. A contractor guide that excludes electric-only customers is now in our corrections log.
What this means for you
If you plan to insulate anyway, do it first through a participating insulation contractor and keep both invoices within two years: that is $600 on top of the heat pump rebate and the insulation rebates. Before buying a mini-split to install yourself, ask Xcel at 800-895-4999 which of its two statements governs your rebate, and get the answer in writing.
